Comet blocks some downloads
Comet automatically blocks dangerous downloads to keep you and your data safe. Safe Downloads helps you:
- Avoid unwanted changes to your browser, computer, or device
- Prevent unauthorized actions that could compromise your accounts
- Block viruses and malware
- Keep your private data secure
When Comet blocks a download, you're protected — no action needed. Blocked downloads are automatically removed from your history after one hour. You can also manually remove them by selecting Delete from history.
Important: While you can choose to download a blocked file, we recommend taking warnings seriously. Attackers often ask you to ignore security warnings to bypass protections.
Why was my download blocked?
Comet may block your download for several reasons:
Dangerous
Files that contain known threats:
Malware - Software designed to harm your device
Deceptive software - Programs that make unwanted changes to your system
Suspicious
Files that exhibit risky characteristics:
Uncommon or unfamiliar files - Rare file types that are often used maliciously
Archive files with hidden content - Files like .zip or .rar that may contain malware or use passwords to evade detection
Insecure
Files downloaded over non-secure connections:
Downloads from sites that don't use HTTPS are less secure
Even if the page you're on is secure, the download itself may come from an insecure source
What should I do if my download was blocked?
If you believe the download is safe:
Verify the source - Make sure you trust the website and the file you're trying to download
Check with the provider - Contact the website or file provider to confirm the file is legitimate
Scan the file - If you proceed with the download, scan it with antivirus software before opening
If you're not sure about the file, don't download it. When in doubt, reach out to the website owner or IT support for verification.
How do I access blocked downloads?
Blocked downloads appear in your Download Manager with a warning. From there you can:
Delete from history - Remove the blocked download (recommended)
Keep anyway - Proceed with the download (only if you're certain the file is safe)
To open your Download Manager, click the Downloads icon in your toolbar or press Ctrl+J (Windows/Linux) or Cmd+J (Mac).
Can I turn off Safe Downloads?
Safe Downloads is always active in Comet to protect your security. This feature cannot be disabled.
If you're frequently encountering warnings for files you trust, verify that:
- You're downloading from the official source
- The website uses HTTPS (look for the lock icon in the address bar)
- Your antivirus software isn't conflicting with Comet's protection
